*Each night the young Ambassador from Wolves Hollow can be seen through a high window of the Tokuno Royal Palace just outside the city of Zento. On the desk in front of her lies a small gray leather-bound book with a shining gold clasp. The following entries provide some details that entertain her thoughts as she learns the customs and traditions of this new culture. *
My arrival here at the Royal Palace was greeted with great warmth and honor. After Severn introduced me to the Emperor and his daughter, to my amazement, they presented me with a gift. This I could not believe. If anyone were going to be presented with gifts, I should have been the giver, and the Emperor and the Princess should have been the receivers. I cannot believe I was so clueless as to not think of bringing them a gift…Something to represent the good relations I hope to keep intact between our two nations. I have only just arrived here this evening…Am I perhaps off to a rocky start already? I must admit when Severn first approached me for this assignment, or called upon me for this assignment, I doubted rather or not I would be able to handle such an important task. After all I am only seventeen. I come from Britain, and the only places I have ever seen outside of my childhood home are New Haven and Wolves Hollow. Am I really qualified for this? I do not think so. I think my being chosen for this was mostly out of fear that something might happen to me. However, along with my doubts over my capabilities in this position come great hopes that I may be able to go above and beyond to become a great diplomat.
Anyway, there is no need to entertain such negative thoughts lest I turn them into a reality. After Severn left us, stating that she had matters to tend to at home in the Hollow, the Emperor and the Princess took me to the small garden outside the Royal kitchen to await the serving of dinner. How amazing is that? My first night in Tokuno and I am eating in the company of the Royal family. The foods they eat seem so perfectly exotic to me. Never in my life have I ever thought of eating Sushi or Wasabi. Though I know not the type of fish the Sushi we ate this evening came from, it was indeed delicious. As was the Wasabi. Surprisingly it had a wonderful burst of heat from an unknown spice. I do not know if that spice is natural or if it was seasoned to be that way, but I did enjoy it.
After we had finished with our meal, which was accompanied by a wonderful conversation about such foods, they showed me to the room that would be mine during my stay here at the Palace. Though it was empty at the time, Princess Yoshi quickly called on the interior decorator that from what I have heard, does all of the Royal decorating. His name, Ta’Koo, sounded oddly familiar to me. I quickly realized this was the man that my new friend Edward had spoken of last evening. Ever so politely he asked in what fashion I would like the room decorated, and if I would need any work space created. I smiled and told him that since I was here to learn about the culture of the Tokuno people, I would like to indulge in the use of furnishings preferred by the locals, and that I would of course need only a small place to work and tend to the affairs presented to me between our nations. Assuring me that he would get right to work, I took the opportunity to explore the city.
The shops here like the foods we enjoyed at dinner, are exotic in design. I have never seen such works of art. That is how I see these buildings….Great works of art, nothing like the architecture back home. As I ventured from one little shop to another I enjoyed the lively attitudes and smiles of the shop keepers. Also, the town is covered in the most beautiful trees I have ever seen. I believe Princess Yoshi called them Cherry Blossoms. They are covered in little pink blossoms that smell absolutely divine. After doing a bit of shopping, picking up several quills and blank parchment, as well as a pair of sandals, I found a pretty little pond where I sat and read for a little while.
Upon returning to the Palace I discovered my private quarters had been fully furnished and decorated. As I had hoped the only furnishings that were in likeness of what is used back home, were the vanity and small writing desk. As I put down my satchel and looked around I politely thanked Ta’Koo for his wonderful work and sent him on about his normal duties.
Now that the day is winding down, I find myself settling in rather well. I think I am going to like it here, I only hope that I do not start any wars between Tokuno and my home land. To fail at my task would ruin the confidence I have gained the past several weeks…
